Kevin's Excellent Excursion

Kevin's Ten-Month Journey:

Map of US showing trip progress

Read earlier entries from July.

August, 1999

1st: Manassas, VA

Today we went to Russell's apartment. I brought my pillow in and tried to sleep but everyone was too loud. We picked up a video, talked, and then left.

2nd

Today Ricky left. I forgot to ask where he was going.

We watched Russell's movie. We watched TV for a few hours and Mom did some laundry.

We identified some caterpillars.

3rd: Reston, VA

Today we pulled into Lake Fairfax Park and did a lot of housecleaning. We pulled out a grocery sack worth of dog fuzz. I found my friend, Ricky, from Bull Run.

The Rices met us at the trailer and then we went out for dinner at the Memphis BBQ.

4th

Today I went to the water park at Lake Fairfax. There was a river around the outside that you could tube or swim in. I spent most of my time in that. On the inside, there was an obstacle course where you had to cross the pond on floating styrofoam boxes while holding onto a mesh net above you.

5th: Shelocta, PA

I did a lot of reading on the way here. On the whole trip I was either sleeping or reading.

From what I saw of Pennsylvania it looks like low rolling hills and lots of farmland. We moved in and I played with some kids at the playground.

Building my Nova

6th

Today we went to look at the NARAM-41 launch area and registered at the hotel.

7th

Today I flew the Star Wars rocket I got for my birthday and it broke, first flight. We found a class to build an Estes Nova Payloader, so I flew that.

Flying my Nova

8th

Today we hit a doe and probably gave it a bruise as big a computer screen.

I had a sleepover at one of my Dad's friend's son's tent. We got to sleep at about 12:42 AM.

9th

Today I played all afternoon and flew my Nova a few times more. In the evening, I tried to get in the pool but it was closing.

11th: Milford, PA

Today we pulled into Milford and I swam in the river.

12th: Northborough, MA

Today we came home and started unpacking. This is the end of the trip.

The things we missed most were

I think the best part of the trip was Thermopolis WY's water parks and the Rio Frio. The worst thing was homeschooling. The most incomplete thing was Yellowstone. What to do again? See "Best things!"

[November note: We finally got the final photos, both from July, back from the developer.

This isn't the end of Kevin's website. Our family will be moving to Arizona sometime before the fall. When we get back into the trailer to make the final move, Kevin will be adding new journal entries and photos. Watch for them!]

Home, safe and sound!
